Downtown Clawson

The Walkable Four-Corners at Main and 14 Mile

A few compact blocks of 1920s storefronts, independent restaurants, and a distillery anchor one of Oakland County’s most walkable small downtowns.

About Downtown Clawson

Downtown Clawson radiates from the intersection of Main Street and 14 Mile Road — the original four corners where the village grew up around a townline road finished in 1874. Several of the brick storefronts here date to the 1920s, and the district was formally adopted into Main Street Oakland County in 2011 as the program’s twelfth accredited community. The result is a tightly edited streetscape: a handful of walkable blocks, low-slung historic buildings, and a steady drumbeat of independent operators rather than national chains.

The food-and-drink mix is what people drive in for. A small-batch distillery, a clutch of award-winning restaurants, a long-running café housed in a former movie theatre, and a weekend market keep the sidewalks busy through most of the year. Clawson’s Fourth of July celebration — continuously held since 1933 — staging-grounds through downtown, and the CruiseFest path along 14 Mile pulls classic-car traffic past these storefronts every August. For a city of roughly eleven thousand, the calendar punches well above its weight.

Housing immediately off the commercial spine is the classic Clawson mix: tree-lined residential blocks of 1920s–40s bungalows, Cape Cods, and brick ranches on modest lots, with a scatter of newer infill builds where older cottages have been replaced. Walk Score for the core hovers near 83 — genuinely rare for Oakland County — meaning groceries, coffee, the library, City Hall, and a full evening out are all reachable on foot from most addresses within a few blocks of Main.

Buyers gravitate here for the combination most close-in suburbs can’t deliver at this price: a real downtown you can walk to, the small, in-city Clawson Public Schools district (K–12 entirely within the 2.2-square-mile city limits), and quick access to both Royal Oak’s nightlife to the south and Troy’s employment centers to the north. Inventory is tight by definition — the walkable core is only a few blocks deep — and homes within easy reach of Main tend to move quickly when they list.
