Farmington

A Historic Main Street in the Heart of Oakland County

Farmington is a small, walkable city built around one of Metro Detroit’s most charming historic downtowns — a tight grid of brick storefronts, restaurants, and gathering places at the crossroads of Grand River Avenue and Farmington Road.

Living in Farmington

Farmington is a small Oakland County city of roughly 2.7 square miles, entirely encircled by its larger neighbor, Farmington Hills. The two are frequently confused, but they are distinct municipalities with separate governments — this page is about the smaller, older Farmington proper, the historic core that gave the area its name. What sets Farmington apart is its walkable downtown along Grand River Avenue and Farmington Road, a rare survivor of pre-war Main Street planning where you can park once and spend an afternoon on foot.

The housing stock reflects the city’s long history. Tree-lined streets just off downtown are populated with bungalows, Tudors, and Colonials from the 1920s through the 1950s, many lovingly restored. Newer construction is scattered throughout, including townhomes and condominiums near the downtown core that appeal to buyers who want the walkability without the maintenance of an older single-family home. Prices generally run more accessible than nearby Birmingham or Northville, making Farmington a strong value play for buyers who prize character and a real downtown.

Civic life centers on the downtown. The Farmington Civic Theater — a restored 1940s single-screen movie house run by the city — anchors Grand River, and the annual Founders Festival each July draws tens of thousands for a long weekend of music, food, and a hometown parade. A year-round farmers market, the Riley Park concert series, and a steady calendar of small-business events keep the district active across the seasons. Restaurants, breweries, and independent shops fill the storefronts.

Farmington is served by Farmington Public Schools, a district shared with surrounding Farmington Hills and rated A- by Niche. Location is one of the city’s quiet advantages — I-696, M-5, and the Jeffries Freeway (I-96) are all within minutes, putting downtown Detroit, the Somerset Collection, and Detroit Metro Airport within a comfortable commute.
