Orchard Lake Schools Campus & East Shore

Historic Seminary Grounds and the Quieter Side of the Lake

Tudor-Gothic spires, a 19th-century campus, and the quieter side of Orchard Lake — addresses with character as much as frontage.

About Orchard Lake Schools Campus & East Shore

The eastern shore of Orchard Lake is organized around one of the most unusual land uses in Metro Detroit: the campus of the Orchard Lake Schools, which has occupied this point since 1909. The complex — formerly the Michigan Military Academy — today houses St. Mary’s Preparatory and SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary, with stone halls, a chapel, athletic fields, and lawns that run down to the water. The campus footprint is large enough that it visually anchors this side of the city, and many of the residential parcels nearby orient themselves around views of its towers and tree line.

Homes in this pocket fall into two broad groups. Directly on the water, lots tend to be deep and heavily landscaped, with private frontage and dock rights on Orchard Lake itself; setbacks and architecture skew older and more traditional than the newer build-outs found on the western shore. A short walk inland, parcels open up into wooded acre-plus lots that trade direct frontage for privacy and tree cover — still within the city, still within the West Bloomfield School District, but priced meaningfully below comparable lakefront product.

The east shore also benefits from its proximity to Pine Lake and the Pine Lake Country Club just across Orchard Lake Road, and to the commercial spine along Orchard Lake Road and Pontiac Trail. Day-to-day errands — groceries, dining, the West Bloomfield civic complex — pull eastward toward West Bloomfield Township rather than into the village itself, which has almost no commercial frontage of its own. That asymmetry is part of the appeal: residential streets stay residential.

Buyers drawn to this section tend to be ones who weight history, mature landscaping, and walkability to the campus grounds over the larger water-facing footprints on the opposite shore. Inventory turns slowly. When estate-quality homes do come up here, they often sell to families with prior ties to the Orchard Lake Schools or to longtime West Bloomfield residents stepping up into the village — a pattern worth understanding before assuming a listing will sit.
